How it works

Every cell in the body sheds DNA into the bloodstream. The Galleri® test utilizes a single blood draw to analyze the DNA circulating in your blood, checking for signs that some of it might come from cancer cells (detecting a cancer signal). If such a signal is found, the test can accurately determine the source within the body of these cancer cells with a 90% accuracy rate.

Designed to detect a wide range of cancers sooner — including those without existing screening options or those that are more uncommon and potentially more fatal, like ovarian and pancreatic cancers — the Galleri® test is a significant advancement. Typically, these types of cancers are only identified when symptoms become evident, often at a later, more critical stage of the disease. The early detection capability of the Galleri® test enables more timely therapeutic interventions, thereby improving patient outcomes.

Results

Results from the Galleri® test are typically ready about 2 weeks after the blood sample is taken.

It's important that a healthcare professional interprets these results, taking into account the patient's medical history and any clinical signs. The outcomes are categorized into either “No Cancer Signal Detected” or “Cancer Signal Detected”. A finding of “No Cancer Signal Detected” does not completely eliminate the possibility of cancer. Conversely, a “Cancer Signal Detected” outcome necessitates further diagnostic procedures to verify if cancer is indeed present.

Note that inaccuracies, such as false positives (identifying a cancer signal when no cancer exists) and false negatives (failing to detect a cancer signal when cancer is actually present), can occur with this test.

NextGen Oncology has collaborated with Galleri® to provide our patients with access to the Galleri® test. This test is advised for annual use among adults at an elevated risk of cancer, including individuals 50 years of age and older. Additionally, at NextGen Oncology, we make the Galleri® test available to patients who do not have genetic mutations but possess a significant family history of cancer.

Important Notice/Advisory

The Galleri® test has not received FDA approval. It is not a genetic test, nor does it identify every form of cancer. The test is not suitable for use in pregnant individuals, those aged 21 or younger, or those currently receiving treatment for cancer. The Galleri® test should not replace routine and personalized cancer screenings, which are crucial for enhancing the chances of early detection.

Age and Cancer Risk

Did you know? Age is the most important risk factor for cancer overall. The incidence rate for cancer climbs steadily as age increases, from fewer than 25 cases per 100,000 under the age of 20, to more than 1,000 people aged 60 or older. (Source: National Institute)
