The main types of cervical cancer are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is cancer of the cervix’s inner lining. Adenocarcinoma is cancer of cells found in the cervical canal.
Often, cervical cancer occurs as a result of the HPV virus. Factors that increase the chances of HPV infection are STIs, a weak immune system, and smoking.
Symptoms of cervical cancer include abnormal vaginal bleeding, bloody vaginal discharge that may have an odor, and pelvic pain.
Cervical cancer can be treated using radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery to remove part or all of the cervix and surrounding organs.
