Urothelial carcinomas are the most common type of bladder cancer, and are cancers of the the inner lining of the bladder. Other types of bladder cancer include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and small cell carcinoma, all of which are non-urothelial bladder carcinomas.
The stages of bladder cancer progression can be grouped into three categories. These are non-muscle invasive, muscle-invasive, and metastatic. Stages 0 and 1 are non-muscle invasive, and stages 2, 3 and the first parts of stage 4 are muscle-invasive.
