Esophageal cancer occurs when cells in the esophagus (the tube that moves food down to the stomach) mutate and grow uncontrollably.
Esophageal cancer most often occurs as a result of mutations in esophageal cells that cause them to grow and form tumors.
Esophageal cancer is grouped into two main types, which are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Other rare types of esophageal cancer also exist.
Symptoms of esophageal cancer include trouble swallowing that gets worse with time, voice hoarseness, weight loss, and pain or burning in the chest.
Esophageal cancer can be treated using chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, or immunotherapy.
